The standpipe has a sack tied round it against the frost, and somebody two plots down is burning prunings, and the smoke is going flat across the path instead of up, which means more rain by dinner time. She is turning over a bed that does not need turning over. It was turned over in November. She is doing it because it is Saturday and this is what Saturday is.
Eight months. That is the figure she keeps arriving at, and she has checked it more than once, the way you check a total you do not like. Eight months of lying on her back at night with her eyes open, saying the same handful of honest sentences up into the dark, and eight months of the ceiling saying nothing back. Not a bad feeling. That would at least be a feeling. Just a flat, papered, entirely ordinary ceiling, and her own voice in the room, and then sleep.
She has not stopped. That is the part nobody would believe. She reads in the mornings. She still goes. She still gives. She could not tell you one doctrine she has changed her mind about. It is only that the whole thing has gone quiet, like a house where the heating is on somewhere and you cannot feel it in the room you are standing in.
And somewhere around the fourth month, without deciding to, she started doing arithmetic. Eight months is a long time. Long enough for it to stop being a season and start being information. Long enough to begin the private, careful, corrosive work of asking what it says about her.
If you have been keeping your own count, then you already know the difference between the silence and the arithmetic, and you know which of the two is actually doing the damage.
Isaiah refuses to explain it, and that is the mercy
Let me tell you what I am not going to do, because it has probably been done to you already.
I am not going to explain your dry season. I could. There is a whole shelf of reasons available and every one of them is delivered with total confidence: it is a testing, it is a weaning, it is preparation for something, it is what happens when a person leans on feeling. Some of that is even true of somebody, somewhere. None of it is knowledge about you, and a person who hands you a reason they cannot possibly have is not comforting you, they are tidying you away.
So I will not certify a thing I cannot audit, and neither should anybody else who talks to you about this.
What I can do is show you a place in Scripture where God Himself declines to explain it, and look at what He puts there instead.
Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the voice of his servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.Isaiah 50:10
Read who that is about. This is not a rebellious person. This is not somebody who wandered off. Isaiah is describing a person who fears God and obeys the voice of His servant, which is to say a person who is doing everything they know to do, and that person is walking in darkness and has no light. The prophet does not pause to diagnose them. He offers no cause. He does not tell them to try harder or to check their heart or to remember how it used to be. He simply says: lean.
Sit with that, because it settles something. In the mind of God, walking in the dark with no light is a thing that happens to the obedient. It is in the text, in black and white, and it has been there for twenty-six centuries waiting for somebody in the eighth month to read it.
So here is what is true of you on a cold Saturday with a fork in your hand. You are not being answered with silence. The quiet is not a reply, it is not a ruling, and it is not a message with your name in it, and I am not softening that for you: it is what the word itself sets out when it puts the dark and the obedience in the same sentence, and it is His Spirit who makes a line like that stop being interesting and start being load bearing.
Now, the arithmetic. That is the actual damage, and it is worth being exact about it, because it is where a good person quietly becomes their own accuser. Eight months of nothing does not hurt very much on its own. What hurts is the sum you build out of it at two in the morning: if He is near, and I feel nothing, then either He is not near or something is wrong with me. The mind cannot leave that alone. It runs the calculation over and over and it always comes out the same way, because the whole sum rests on a premise nobody ever checked, which is that nearness is a thing you can feel from the inside.
You have not been set down. Not for a month of it and not for the eighth. The word says He is the one who began the good work in you and He is the one carrying it through, and that sentence was written to people He was not currently thrilling. The Holy Spirit who came to live in you did not attach a condition about your temperature, and He has not been quietly withdrawing at the same rate your feelings have.
And there is one more thing in that verse that is easy to walk past. It says lean. Not glow. Not rise. Lean, which is the one thing a person can do with no light and no strength and nothing showing, and which is somehow the exact posture He asks for.
Then what does a leaning person actually say?
David shows you, and he does not say anything cheerful. He turns and speaks to his own soul: why are you cast down, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God. Look at the shape of that. He does not wait until he feels better to say it. He says it into the downcast state, out loud, to himself, while it is still going on. That is not pretending, and it is not a technique that produces heat. It is a person putting the truth in the room by mouth because the room has gone quiet, and Scripture keeps every word of his complaint in the same psalm, which tells you what God thinks of an honest one.
You were given a voice for exactly that, and the Spirit in you is the one who makes such a sentence carry further than the sound of it.
God is near in a season you cannot feel, and His nearness is not being measured on your instrument.
Notice what the prophet does not say. He does not say the light will come back next month, and I am not saying it either, because I have no authority to hand you a date and I will not counterfeit one. What is settled is Him, not the schedule. He has not moved. That is a statement about His position, not about your reception of it, and it was true through every one of the eight months you counted, including the ones you spent building a case against yourself.
You are His today, at the same temperature you woke up at. The word says so and His Spirit is the one holding you in it, and nothing about the last eight months is admissible as evidence to the contrary.
Declare this over yourself
You speak these in Christ and not in your own strength, and whatever He does with the quiet is His to decide. Isaiah 50:10 is the ground under them, and His Spirit is the one who makes a spoken line land in a person who is feeling nothing at all. Say them at your ordinary volume. Nothing here needs to be worked up.
- Eight months of ceiling, you are not a verdict and you never had the standing to be one. The word puts the darkness and the obedience in the same sentence, so you are not information about me. Say what you like into the room; you are not the one keeping the books.
- Arithmetic I have been doing at two in the morning, you are struck out. The sum rests on a premise God never signed, in the name of Jesus, and nearness was never a thing I was going to feel from the inside. Take your figures off my table.
- Lord, You have not moved, and Your Spirit did not leave this room when the feeling did. I am leaning, which is the one thing this verse asks of somebody with no light, and I am doing it out loud on a cold Saturday. You are here, and I cannot feel it, and both halves of that are true.
