He Tends It2 Thessalonians 3:3

He Establishes and He Keeps

This message is for A man who has quietly carried the entire weight of keeping himself believing for thirty years, has never told anybody, and is now tired in a way that has nothing to do with doubt.

He would not put it this way to anybody, and he has never had to, because nobody has ever asked him a question that would get near it.

But if you did ask, and if he answered honestly, he would tell you that for about thirty years he has been the one keeping himself believing.

Not in a crisis way. He is not somebody who has fought off doubt in the night. It is quieter and more structural than that, and it is this: at some point in his twenties he understood, without anybody teaching it, that his faith was a thing he had and would have to hold, and that if he stopped holding it, it would go.

So he has held it. For thirty years. With a kind of steady low-level grip that has never let up, in the way you would carry something across a room that has no handles.

He is fifty-four.

He goes. He reads. He gives. He would tell you, and it would be true, that he believes every word of it.

And he is tired in a way he has never found a name for, and it is not doubt, and it is not dryness in the ordinary sense, and it is not the tiredness of his job or his marriage or his years. It is the specific fatigue of a man who has never once put something down because he has never known that anybody else was holding it.

Two verbs in one short sentence

Paul writes a sentence to a church that had every reason to be frightened, and it has two verbs in it and both of them belong to the Lord.

But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.2 Thessalonians 3:3

Who shall stablish you. Establish. Set firm. Make stable. That is the work of putting something on a footing, and it is His.

And keep you. Guard, preserve, hold. That is the work of maintaining it afterward, and it is His as well.

Both ends. The setting and the keeping. Paul does not divide the labor and give one half to God and one half to the believer, which is what almost everybody assumes without ever having read a verse that says it.

And notice the reason he gives at the front. The Lord is faithful. The reliability being pointed at is His, not yours, and that is the ground the whole sentence stands on.

You are established and kept by Somebody, and both verbs were always in His column. That is not me relieving you of vigilance you were meant to keep; 2 Thessalonians 3:3 puts the establishing and the keeping both on the Lord, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a short sentence and lays it beside a man who has been gripping something for thirty years.

Where the grip came from

Now let me name where you learned it, because you did learn it and it is worth knowing that it was taught rather than true.

Nobody sat you down and said your faith is yours to hold. But you absorbed it, in your twenties, out of a hundred small things: the way people talked about others who had fallen away, the emphasis in the preaching you sat under, the general atmosphere in which perseverance was described as something a person does.

It is not all false. There is such a thing as continuing, and Scripture speaks about it. But somewhere the whole weight got transferred, and once a man believes he is the guarantor of his own faith, everything after that is holding.

And here is what it costs. Not doubt. Never doubt; the grip prevents that, which is exactly why nobody has ever noticed. It costs rest. A man carrying something across a room without handles cannot sit down, cannot be tired, cannot have an off week, and cannot enjoy any of it, because enjoying requires letting go with at least one hand.

You have not been able to rest in thirty years because you have never known that anybody else had hold of it. The written word puts the establishing and the keeping in the Lord's hands with no clause dividing it, and the Holy Spirit is not a resource a man draws on to help him keep himself.

And the guardrail, because this is the landing category and nothing here is a routine. If a cold season comes after this, it will not be your grip slipping. There is no vigilance I could recommend that would prevent one, and I am not going to prescribe any, because a program is just a new handle for the same weight.

You are not the guarantor of this and the next hard year will not be your failure to hold on. Scripture gives both verbs to Him and gives the reason as His faithfulness, and the Holy Spirit has been the one keeping a man through thirty years he thought he was keeping himself.

The breakthrough

So here is the hour.

I am not going to tell you to stop being faithful, and I am not asking you to test anything. Nothing here is a suggestion that you find out what happens if you let go, and I would not put a man in that position.

And nothing here needs you to feel lighter. If you close this and the grip is exactly where it has been for thirty years, nothing has failed and no verdict is being passed on you.

What is on offer is that you learn who else is holding it.

That is all. Not letting go as an experiment. Knowing, in the place where a man actually knows things, that both verbs in that verse are His, and that the thing you have been carrying without handles has been held from underneath the whole time by Somebody with a better grip.

You are established and kept by a Lord who is described as faithful, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God says in one short sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts a hand over a man's hand.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud where you are, standing or sitting, in whatever voice tonight has left you. The right to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing about establishing you and keeping you is the ground under your feet, with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because whether the tiredness lifts is His to give and never mine to arrange.

  1. Weight of keeping myself believing, you were never mine to hold. The word of God says the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you and keep you, and both verbs in that sentence are His with nothing divided off for me.
  2. Grip I learned in my twenties, you are not what anybody was taught and you are not staying. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because the Holy Spirit is not a resource a man draws on to help him keep himself.
  3. Lord, You establish me and You keep me, and the reason given is Your faithfulness and never mine. I thank You, because Your word puts both ends of it in Your hands, and Your Spirit has had a hand over mine for thirty years I thought I was holding alone.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
