Before I go anywhere near the list, I want to say the true thing first, because if I leave it to the end you will read the whole of this from underneath a verdict.
It is still lit in you. Right now, tonight, under everything on that page.
I know that because of what the list is. Nobody writes one of those about a person they have stopped loving.
She is fifty-one and she does it in a notebook, and it started as something a good book suggested and it has become the gate.
The rule she operates by, which she has never stated to anyone in these terms, is that she may not speak to God about anything real until she has dealt with everything unreal between them. So she sits down at about eleven, and she goes back over the day, and she writes.
Sharpness with her son at breakfast. The thing she thought about her neighbor and did not say but thought properly, with detail. Not phoning her aunt again. The way she talked about somebody at work in a way she would not want repeated. The wine, or the second glass of it, or her attitude about being questioned on it.
And on a bad night the list generates its own material, because writing it makes her tired and being tired makes her uncharitable and she can catch herself being uncharitable about the list.
She very often does not get to the praying. She has fallen asleep at the table twice this month with the notebook open, and both times woke up at two feeling like a woman who had failed to make an appointment.
What God says He will not despise
David writes the most famous confession in Scripture and then says what the actual offering is, and the offering is not an inventory.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.Psalm 51:17
A broken and a contrite heart.
That is a state, not a document. It is what a person is when they arrive, and David is writing after the worst thing he ever did, so if a full accounting were the requirement he had more reason than anybody to produce one.
He does not produce one. He offers the condition of his heart, and he says God will not despise it, and the whole psalm is built on that being sufficient at the door.
You have already brought the only offering that verse names, and you bring it every night before you write a word. That is not me finding a shortcut for you; Psalm 51:17 puts the sacrifice in the state of the heart rather than in the completeness of the reckoning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the psalm written after the worst night of a king's life and lays it on a kitchen table at eleven.
What the list has become
Now let me look at the notebook itself, and I am not going to build a case against you out of it.
The instinct underneath it is good. Wanting nothing between you and God is not a fault; it is love being careful.
But watch what has happened to the mechanism. The list was meant to clear the way to God. It has become the way to God, which means it is now a threshold, and thresholds have a height, and yours has been getting higher for years because you are honest and an honest person always finds more.
And here is the thing that should decide it. On the nights the list is longest, which is to say the nights you are most in need, you are least likely to get through it. The system fails precisely when it is needed most.
You have been kept out on the worst nights by a gate you built to get closer. The written word names the broken heart as the sacrifice rather than the ledger, and the Holy Spirit does not stand at a kitchen table checking a page before He will listen.
I also want to say the plain thing that this site says in every article, because it applies to your notebook. Dry feeling is not on that list and never was. Tiredness is not on it. Being flat, being uninterested, having nothing for God for weeks: none of that is sin, and if any of it has crept into the notebook then the notebook has begun accusing you of things God has never once mentioned.
You are not under a charge that has to be answered before you may speak. Scripture puts the contrite heart at the door and calls it the sacrifice, and the Holy Spirit has been in that kitchen every night, including the two you fell asleep in.
So here is the hour.
I am not going to ask you to feel forgiven, and I am not going to tell you that repentance does not matter, because it does and you know it does and I would insult you by pretending otherwise. What I will not do is let it be the price of admission, because it never was one.
And nothing here needs you to feel anything tonight. If you close this and go and sit at that table as flat as you have been for months, nothing has failed and no verdict is being passed on you.
What is on offer is that you speak first.
Not instead. First. The actual thing, out loud, before the notebook is open, in whatever state you are in, because a broken heart is the offering and you have had one in your hands the whole time.
You are already carrying the sacrifice that verse names, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God says when it puts the contrite heart where a ledger would go, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes a gate off a kitchen table.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud where you are, sitting or standing, in whatever voice tonight has left you. The right to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing about a broken and contrite heart is the ground under your feet, with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because whether anything lifts by morning is His to give and never yours to produce.
- List I write before I can speak, you are not the doorway and you never were one. The word of God calls a broken and contrite heart the sacrifice, and David offered it after the worst night of his life without producing an inventory.
- Threshold that keeps me out worst on the nights I need it most, you are down. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because the Holy Spirit has never once stood at a table checking a page before He would listen.
- Lord, You do not despise a broken heart and I have been carrying one to that table every night. I thank You, because Your word puts that where a ledger would go, and Your Spirit has been sitting up in that kitchen, including the nights I fell asleep at it.
