His hands are on the faders, which is where his hands have been on a Sunday evening for eleven years.
Third song. He brings the vocal up an eighth of a decibel because the room has just got louder and the words matter more than the guitars do. Four rows in front of him, hands are going up. Sylvia's are up. The two lads from the college are jumping, actually jumping, and he loves them for it and he nudges the drums up a touch to give them something to jump to. He hears every line twice, once in the room and once in the cans on his head, and he knows which word the writer of that song was reaching for, because he has listened to it four hundred times while setting the levels.
And he does not raise his hands. He has not raised his hands since he was about nineteen. It is not a policy. It is simply not what his body does.
Eleven years ago a man he liked said to him in the car park, kindly, and while looking at his shoes, that he seemed quite reserved, spiritually. Just an observation. The man has long since moved away. The sentence never did.
So there he stands. The room in front of him is warm and glad and unembarrassed, and he is glad it is, and somewhere underneath the third song there is a small permanent question about whether he is the coldest person in this building.
The volume was never the reading
Let me name what is actually heavy here, because it is not the hands and it never was.
You have been carrying a verdict that was passed on you by somebody who could see the outside of you and nothing else. It was probably said kindly. It may have been said once, in passing, by a person who forgot it before they reached their car. And you have been quietly running an audit ever since, comparing the inside of yourself against the outside of everybody in front of you, which is the most unfair comparison a human being can make and the one every quiet person in every congregation makes weekly. It is exhausting, and it is not devotion, and God never asked it of you.
You are loved by God at exactly the temperature you are, and your quiet is not being read as coldness in heaven. Scripture says the Lord does not see as man sees, because man looks on the outward appearance while the Lord looks on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is not standing behind you with a clipboard counting arms. He is inside you, at the level where the actual affection is.
Now, hear the other half of that, because a comfort that has to knock somebody else down is not a comfort. Those raised hands in front of you are real. The two lads jumping are not performing, they are not shallow, and their expression is the honest overflow of what is in them. They are not the standard and neither are you. Nothing in this is a competition and there is no ranking to climb or defend.
Carmel and the cave were the same man
There is a man in the Bible who was as loud as it gets. Elijah on Carmel: fire falling out of a clear sky in front of a whole nation, a soaked altar going up, the prophet shouting at the top of his voice. Nobody has ever accused him of being reserved.
Then he ends up in a cave on a mountain, worn out and undone, and God says to stand at the entrance because He is going to pass by. And what comes is a wind that tears rocks off the mountain, and God is not in the wind. Then an earthquake, and God is not in the earthquake. Then fire, and God is not in the fire.
And after the fire, a low whisper.1 Kings 19:12
The same God who had answered by fire in front of a nation eight days earlier chose, for this man, a sound so quiet the text struggles to name it. A voice of thin silence. And Elijah, the loudest prophet in Israel, knew instantly it was Him.
You have a God who suits the volume to the person He is speaking with, and He has never once mistaken your quiet for absence. That is not a comforting idea somebody had, it is written into the nineteenth chapter of First Kings, and the Holy Spirit who moved on Carmel and in the cave is the same Spirit at work in you at your own volume on a Sunday evening.
Here is the picture I want to leave in you. A fire that is roaring and a fire that has burned down to coals are not two temperatures. Anyone who has ever cooked over one knows the coals are hotter. The flame is what a fire looks like. The coal is what a fire is. God has never once read the flame and skipped the coal.
And notice what the whisper was for. It was not a rebuke for having been loud on Carmel, and it was not a lesson about the right way to hear from God. It was tenderness. God had a worn out man on His hands who had just done the largest thing of his life and had nothing left, and He came at the volume that man could bear. That is not a technique. That is affection choosing its own register, which is the only thing love ever does.
You are being spoken to in the register you can actually receive, and that has been true of God since long before you noticed it. The written word shows Him doing exactly that at Horeb, and the same Spirit who carried a whisper into a cave is the one carrying this into you now, at whatever volume reaches you.
You have been given real authority to say what God says about your own heart, over the top of an eleven year old sentence. The word hands that authority to everyone who is in Christ, and the Holy Spirit carries it; it is not your certainty that makes it work.
And you can speak. That is the whole point of this, and it is why we are not going to stop at feeling better. Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, said out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Not thought at it. Said. Your mountain is not your temperament. Your mountain is a verdict, and a verdict can be answered out loud by the person it was passed on.
If the quiet in you has gone past temperament into a numbness that has swallowed everything, and there are days you would rather not be here, please tell a living person today. Your doctor, or a crisis line, 988 in the United States, 116 123 in the United Kingdom, or the emergency number where you live. Nothing about that is a spiritual verdict on you. It is what love looks like when it moves quickly.
So here is what is happening, right where you stand, with nobody watching and no service required.
The verdict passed on you in a car park is not the reading. Heaven has never once asked you to worship in somebody else's body, and the way affection comes out of you is not a defect to be worked on. God made a world with roaring fires and banked coals in it, and He warms His hands at both.
You do not have to raise your hands tonight. You also do not have to keep them down to prove a point, which is its own kind of prison. What you get to do is worship the way that is actually yours, on purpose, and stop apologizing in your own head while you do it.
You are free of a verdict that was passed with the wrong instrument, right now, as you read this. Scripture takes the seeing out of human hands and gives it to God alone, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes a car park off a woman.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, at your own volume, whatever that is. The right to say them has been given to you in Christ, so they stand on His finished work and not on how much heat you can feel while you speak, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them. What He then warms, and when, is His, and the outcome is His to decide. Your part is to stop letting a car park be the judge.
- Quiet hands on the faders, you are not evidence against me. The word says the Lord looks on the heart while man looks on the outward appearance, and the coal is hotter than the flame that people can see.
- Verdict handed to me in a car park, you do not get to name my heart, and I refuse you in the name of Jesus. God met the loudest prophet in Israel with a voice of thin silence, so quiet has never once been His word for cold.
- Lord, You read the coal and not the flame, and You always have. Your Spirit is at work in me at my own volume, and He has never once asked me to love You in somebody else's body. I thank You, and tonight I am worshipping You the way You actually made me to.
