The Psalm That Ends in the Dark

This message is for A woman who has been taught to finish every prayer on a hopeful note, cannot honestly do it any more, and has therefore stopped praying out loud rather than lie at the end of a sentence.

She stopped praying out loud in April and nobody has noticed, because she still prays; she just does it in her head now where the ending does not have to be said.

The last time was at her sister's kitchen table. Four of them, hands round, praying for a diagnosis that had come back badly.

And she heard herself doing the thing. She said the true part, which was that this was awful and they were frightened, and then she felt the shape of the sentence coming, the one everybody does, the but we know that You are good and we trust You in this, and she said it, and her mouth was making it and nothing else in her was.

She went home and sat in the car outside her own house for a while.

What she has worked out since, and it has taken months, is that she was taught the shape and never taught that it was a shape. Every prayer she has heard since she was nine has had the turn in it. The lift at the end. The bringing it round. It is so universal that she assumed it was a rule about prayer rather than a habit of a particular kind of room.

And she cannot do it any more, and she will not fake it, and so she has gone quiet.

The thing she has never said to anyone, not even to her sister, is the sentence underneath: I do not think I am allowed to finish in the dark.

The psalm that has no turn in it

I want to show you the eighty-eighth psalm, and specifically I want you to look at how it stops.

Lover and friend hast thou put far from me, and mine acquaintance into darkness.Psalm 88:18

That is the last verse. That is the end of the psalm. There is no next line.

Read it again and notice that it is not even neutral. The last word is darkness, and the complaint is aimed directly at God, and the psalm goes out on it with no lift, no resolution, no but I will yet praise Him, which almost every other psalm of that kind supplies.

And God kept it. It is in the book. It has been read in worship for three thousand years exactly as the man wrote it, with the dark ending intact, and nobody has ever been permitted to tidy it up.

You are not required to finish well, and the requirement you have been obeying is not in the book. That is not me giving you permission on God's behalf; Psalm 88 is in Scripture with an unresolved ending on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that fact and lays it on a woman who has gone quiet since April.

Why the shape got mistaken for a rule

Now let me say something gentle about where the turn came from, because I do not want you angry at people who meant well.

The lift at the end of a prayer is mostly a good instinct. It is faith reaching for something true in a bad moment, and in a room where somebody has just heard terrible news it can be a genuine mercy.

The trouble is that a habit repeated in every room by every person for thirty years stops looking like a habit. You never heard anyone finish in the dark, so you concluded it was not allowed, and then you found yourself unable to do the only ending you believed was available.

You have been failing a rule that was never issued. The written word closes an entire psalm on the word darkness without softening it, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who has been requiring the upward turn of you.

And here is the piece I most want you to have. When you said that sentence at your sister's table with nothing behind it, you were more troubled about it than anyone else in the room. That is not the behavior of a woman drifting from God. That is somebody who cares so much about not lying to Him that she would rather say nothing at all.

You are being honest at real cost, and honesty toward God has never once been counted against a person. Scripture keeps the rawest prayers in the collection rather than editing them, and the Holy Spirit is not standing over a kitchen table grading endings.

The breakthrough

So here is the hour, and there is no lift in it, on purpose.

I am not going to ask you to feel hopeful, and I am not going to hand you back the turn in a nicer form. If you close this and the dark is still the honest ending for you tonight, nothing has failed and nothing is being counted against you.

What is on offer is that you say one sentence out loud and stop.

Out loud, because that is the specific thing that went in April. And stop, deliberately, at the end of the true part, without the shape. It will feel wrong. It will feel like leaving a door open. Do it anyway, because a prayer that ends in the dark is in Scripture and a prayer that is never said is not.

You are permitted to end where the man in Psalm 88 ended, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God does by keeping that psalm exactly as it was prayed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes a rule off a woman who has been silent for months.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud where you are, sitting or standing, in whatever voice this evening has left you. The right to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing by keeping a psalm that ends in the dark is the ground under your feet, with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because whether anything lifts by morning is His to give and never yours to produce.

  1. Rule that a prayer must end well, you are not in the book and you never were. The word of God closes the eighty-eighth psalm on the word darkness and has kept it that way for three thousand years without one hand tidying it.
  2. Fear that finishing in the dark is not allowed, you have no ground here. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because the Holy Spirit is not the one who has been grading my endings at a kitchen table.
  3. Lord, You kept a prayer that never came round, and You kept it exactly as it was said. I thank You, because Your word did not edit that man, and Your Spirit has held me every day since April while I have been praying where nobody could hear the end.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
