Burning QuietlyMatthew 6:6

The Room With the Door Shut

This message is for A man who prays alone and has begun to wonder whether it counts, because everything he has ever seen called real prayer happened with other people in the room.

He is in the workshop by twenty past five most mornings and that is where he prays, out loud, on his own, and has for about twenty-two years.

That is the whole of his prayer life. There is no group. He went to one for a while about a decade back and it was fine and he stopped going, not from any objection, but because it was not where anything happened for him.

He is fifty-nine.

And here is what has grown in him over three or four years, and it did not come from a sermon and nobody has said it to him.

Everything he has ever seen or heard called real prayer has involved other people. The stories are always in rooms. Somebody was praying with somebody. There was a meeting that went on. Two of them agreed about a thing. The testimonies at his own church are almost always plural.

And his are always singular, and always in a workshop, and always out loud to nobody.

So the question has assembled itself slowly and it is not dramatic. It is: does this count, or is this the private version of something whose real form is corporate? Is he doing a lesser thing, well, for twenty-two years.

Which room He sends you to

When Jesus teaches ordinary people how to pray, He gives an instruction about location, and it is worth reading exactly.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.Matthew 6:6

Enter into thy closet. Go into the room. And when thou hast shut thy door. Shut it. Deliberately, so that nobody is present.

This is the primary teaching on how to pray, given by Jesus, to a general crowd, and the setting He specifies is a man on his own behind a closed door.

He does not describe it as a supplement or a fallback for people who cannot get to something. It is the instruction.

You have been doing the thing He actually taught, for twenty-two years, in a workshop at twenty past five. That is not me consoling a solitary man; Matthew 6:6 names the shut door as the setting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the primary teaching on prayer and lays it beside a bench and a kettle in the dark.

Why the stories are always plural

Now let me answer the actual puzzle, because you are not imagining the pattern and I am not going to pretend you are.

The stories you hear are plural. That is true. But think about why.

A story requires a witness. Anything that happens in a room with nobody in it has nobody to tell it, and so it never enters the pool of things people tell each other. It is not that solitary prayer produces less; it is that solitary prayer produces no narrators.

So the corpus of stories your church swaps on a Sunday is not a sample of what God does. It is a sample of what got observed. Those are entirely different populations and everybody treats them as the same one.

You have been comparing your life with a record that could never have contained it. The written word puts the Father in the secret place and names Him as the one who sees there, and the Holy Spirit has been the only witness in a workshop for twenty-two years and needs no other.

And I want to say this plainly too, in both directions, because this site does not sort people. Praying with others is real and good and Scripture is full of it, and the man who thrives in that room is not doing a showy version of a private thing. Neither of you is the standard. There is no standard; there is a Father and two doors.

You are not doing a lesser version of anything, and no ranking of prayers by attendance has ever existed. Scripture gives the shut door as the primary instruction without one word of apology in it, and the Holy Spirit has been in that workshop on every morning of twenty-two years.

The breakthrough

So here is the hour, and it is small because your situation is fine.

I am not going to send you to a group, and I am not going to tell you not to go to one either; that is a decision about a Tuesday and it is yours.

And nothing here needs you to feel anything different tomorrow morning. If you go out at twenty past five and it is as flat as it has been, nothing has failed and no verdict is being passed on you.

What is on offer is that you drop the question.

Does this count. It has been running underneath twenty-two years of faithful mornings, and it was assembled out of a sample that could never have included you, and the primary instruction on how to pray describes exactly your room.

You are praying in the setting Christ specified when He taught it, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God does when it says shut the door, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes a doubt out of a workshop.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these out loud where you are, standing or sitting, in whatever voice this morning has left you. The right to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing about shutting the door and praying to the Father in secret is the ground under your feet, with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because what any of it produces is His to give and never mine to arrange.

  1. Doubt about praying alone, you are pointed the wrong way entirely. The word of God says enter into thy closet and shut thy door, and that is the primary instruction on how to pray, given in person, to everybody.
  2. Sample of stories I have been measuring myself against, you could never have contained me. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because a room with nobody in it produces no narrators and the Holy Spirit has never needed a second witness.
  3. Lord, You see in secret and You said so Yourself, and You have been in that workshop for twenty-two years. I thank You, because Your word names the shut door without one word of apology, and Your Spirit has been the only witness there and always was enough.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
