It is still burning in you, and I want that said before anything else, because you will read this expecting to be found out.
The evidence is that you are here. A woman who had genuinely stopped caring what God thinks of her does not open something like this at half past ten on a Wednesday.
She is thirty-nine and she has a sentence about herself.
She will not write it down and she has never said it out loud, and it is short, and she thinks it in the specific voice you use for things you consider settled.
And the arrangement she has come to, over about eight years, is that God agrees with it.
That is the thing to understand about her, because from outside it looks like ordinary low mood and it is not. She has not concluded that God is angry. Anger would be an event, and events end. She has concluded that God shares her assessment. That He looks at her and sees more or less what she sees and is, being God, gracious about it.
Which means the silence is not neutral. When she prays and nothing comes back, that is not absence to her. It is agreement. A quiet room is a room where nobody has contradicted the sentence, and eight years of quiet rooms have gone into the account.
The verse has a word for what you are describing
Paul writes eight words that go directly at your arrangement, and one of them is the word for exactly what you have been living under.
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1
Condemnation. Not punishment. Not anger. A settled adverse judgment about a person, which is precisely what your sentence is and precisely what you believe God is holding.
And then look at the three words in front of it. There is now. Present tense, current, as of this Wednesday. Not eventually. Not once you have improved. Now.
So the exact thing you believe God holds about you is named in Scripture and then declared not to exist for a person in Christ.
You have been living under the one thing that verse says is not there. That is not me softening your own assessment of yourself; Romans 8:1 uses the word for a settled judgment and puts it at zero in the present tense, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes eight words and lays them on a woman at half past ten on a Wednesday.
Whose voice the silence is
Now let me get at the mechanism, because this is where it is actually running.
You are reading silence as agreement. And silence cannot agree. It cannot do anything; it has no content. What is happening is that you supply the content, and you supply it from the only source available in the room, which is the sentence you already hold.
So every quiet prayer is not God confirming your verdict. It is you hearing your own verdict again in an empty room and attributing it to Him.
That is why eight years have made it worse rather than better. The system generates its own evidence. There is no possible quiet in which it does not.
You have been hearing your own sentence and crediting it to God. The written word declares no condemnation for a person in Christ and gives the accusing to somebody else entirely, and the Holy Spirit is called the Comforter and has never once been described as the prosecution.
And I want to say the plain thing about the eight years of nothing. Dry feeling is not agreement either. It is not a verdict, it is not a symptom, and it is certainly not God confirming anything about a woman's worth. A tired heart is a tired heart, and this site will keep saying so.
You are not being agreed with, and no assessment of you has ever been seconded. Scripture puts the condemnation at zero and the accusing outside God entirely, and the Holy Spirit has been in every quiet room she has read as a courtroom.
So here is the hour.
I am not going to talk you out of the sentence, and I am not going to ask you what it is. And nothing here needs you to feel differently about yourself. If you close this holding exactly the same opinion of yourself as you did at the top, nothing has failed and no verdict is being passed on you.
What is on offer is that you withdraw the attribution.
Keep your opinion of yourself if you must, for now. But stop putting God's name on it. It is yours. It came from you, it is maintained by you, and eight years of silence have not once contained a syllable of it from Him.
You are standing in a room where the condemnation is declared absent, right now, as you read this. That is what the word of God says in eight words in the present tense, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and takes a signature off a verdict nobody else ever signed.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these out loud where you are, sitting or standing, in whatever voice tonight has left you. The right to say them is not manufactured by feeling: Christ is in you, and what God has already put in writing about there being no condemnation is the ground under your feet, with the Holy Spirit carrying it rather than the steadiness of your voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, because whether anything in me agrees by morning is His to give and never mine to produce.
- Opinion I hold of myself, you were never seconded and you never had a second signature. The word of God says there is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and condemnation is the exact word for a settled judgment like mine.
- Silence I have been reading as agreement, you have no content and never had any. In the name of Jesus I refuse you the last word, because the Holy Spirit is called the Comforter and has never once been described as the prosecution.
- Lord, You have not agreed with the sentence and You never signed it. I thank You, because Your word puts the condemnation at zero and dates it now, and Your Spirit has been in every quiet room I have been treating as a courtroom.
